Dr. Gober completed her undergradulate degree at Binghamton University in Binghamton, NY and went on to earn her graduate degrees from Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY. Hofstra’s unique combined doctoral program in both clinical and school psychology afforded Dr. Gober the opportunity to develop her expertise in working with young children, particularly children with special needs, and in the clinical skills needed for effective therapeutic intervention.
While earning her graduate degree Dr. Gober’s first internship was at the Hagedorn Little Village School, Jack Joel Center for Special Children, in Seaford, Long Island. Her clinical internship was completed at the Albert Ellis Institute in New York, NY. After training at both institutions, Dr. Gober was asked to remain on staff and did so for years following her training. At both the Hagedorn Little Village School and the Albert Ellis Institute Dr. Gober had the opportunity to be trained and supervised by top clinicians and researchers in the field of psychology, including Dr. Albert Ellis himself.
At the Hagedorn Little Village School Dr. Gober received her initial training and experience in working with young children and families with special needs. Within this school setting Dr. Gober provided individual therapy to children and adults, completed psychoeducational evaluations, supported classroom staff and parents in designing behavior modification plans for their children, led therapeutic groups for children and adults, and conducted trainings and workshops for parents and teachers. Dr. Gober served as the Director of Psychological Services at the school until 2008, when she began devoting her time primarily to her private practice.
At the Ellis Institute Dr. Gober received extensive training in Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) and worked in both individual and group therapy settings. REBT is a specific type of cognitive-behavioral therapy, which empowers individuals by teaching us that it is not necessarily events in the world that are responsible for our upset, but our thoughts about and interpretation of these events. If we can learn to make ourselves less “disturbable,” as Dr. Ellis would say, then we acquire the skills to achieve our goals and live a more fulfilled life.
At this time Dr. Gober now works with adults and children in her private offices in Manhattan and Rye, NY.
